New Non-Surgical Treatment For Skin Cancer
PDT (PhotodynMIC Therapy) is a new treatment for treating basal cell carcinomas
(BCC's) and solar keratoses (SK's) know as sunspots with excellent cosmetic
results. Therapy is simply a cream applied to the lesion then exposed to a
special red light. During exposure, the cream is activated and destroys abnormal
cells that cause BCC's and SK's, while leaving healthy skin unharmed. Just
two treatments are required one week apart. You can even have several lesions
treated at the same time.
What is Metvix PDT?
PDT stands for photodynamic therapy. Metvix PDT is a new effective treatment
for non-melanoma skin cancers as well as certain types of pre-cancer lesions.
How does Metvix PDT Work?
Metvix PDT uses a different approach to the treatment of these lesions in comparison
to conventinal treatments. It is a simple, non-inasive treatment that consists
of the application of metvix cream to the lesion followed by its exposure to
light from the specifically designed Aktilite lamp. The cells in the lesion
absorb the active ingredient from the Metvix cream. When exposed to light from
the Aktilite lamp, a chemical reaction occurs which destroys only the lesion,
leaving healthy skin unharmed.
Digital Melanoma Screening Now Available
Computerised imaging of pigmented skin lesions utilising Digital Epiluminescene
Microscopy (DELM) is also available. DELM increases recognition, diagnostic
accuracy and early dectection. When dectected early, Melanoma has a high chance
of complete cure. Our digital imaging computer aides the tracking of changing
lesions. Images can be stored to compare at follow up visits.
